About the Illustrator

A lovely and wonderfully talented artist and illustrator, Sally J. Collins illustrated the entire Hamish McHaggis series but that was only part of her artistic legacy. She loved working across a variety of artistic endeavours, including painting and exhibiting her work. She was also a talented dressmaker.

A consummate professional with an incredible eye for detail, her illustrations for the Hamish McHaggis books were largely created using coloured pencil, and aquarelle pencils. Her images were the result of painstaking research of the venues featured in the books, also paying great attention to the natural world – the seasons, and flora and fauna included in her drawings and paintings. She was kind and thoughtful, and loved working with children at events, encouraging them to draw Hamish with her. Sally was a delight to work with and had a great sense of fun. She was always delighted to hear from Hamish McHaggis fans.
